On July 11th Apple launched the new iPhone also known as the iPhone 3G. In many countries it is sold exclusively by certain carriers and locked to their networks, so
it cannot be used with other mobile network operators.
While the first generation iPhone has been hacked and unlocked very successfully, the process on the 3G seems a lot more difficult.
We started this competition to provide an additional incentive for those who work on the 3G soft-unlock, to show our support and to hopefully speed up the process.
Something similar was done for the FW 1.1.2/BL 4.6 version of the first gen iPhone. They collected a total of $1,182 and GeoHot took it home.
The idea for this competition was born on the
hackint0sh iPhone Forum, please ask questions there.
The rules are easy: Everybody donates as much as he or she wants through PayPal. The first person/team who comes up with a reproducable and free soft-unlock solution (by the deadline) for the current version of the 3G gets the money. If the goal of a 3G soft-unlock cannot be achieved, the money will be donated to
UNICEF
- The unlock has to work with the current OTB 3G iPhones (temporary downgrading allowed):
Device: iPhone 3G
Baseband: 02.08.01
Build: Big Bear 5C1
Firmware: 2.0.2
- The method has to be software-only!
- All must work after the unlock: GPS, GPRS, 3G, phone, SMS, WiFi, Youtube,...
- The method must not involve any illegal trickery with IMEI and the like
- A successful unlock has to be published AND tested before: October 28th, 2008
Successful unlocks can be reported to
ididit@unlock3g.org. The name of the winner will be posted on this website.
The PayPal account is verified and belongs to hackint0sh.org member Lost Soul. For additional security, you can send a copy of your donation receipt to

Please click the PayPal button below and donate for the common goal of the 3G unlock!
Important note: I'm not the account holder and there is no way for me to update the display of the amount donated automatically. I will update it as often as possible. Don't worry, if you receive a PayPal confirmation your money is here.
